How to Reset TI-84 Calculator

Is your TI-84 graphing calculator frozen, displaying errors, or behaving unexpectedly? A reset usually fixes the problem. This guide covers all three reset methods โ€” from the safe RAM reset to a full factory restore.

โš ๏ธ Warning: Resetting your calculator will delete data. A RAM reset is the safest option โ€” it clears temporary memory but keeps archived programs. A factory reset erases everything.

Method 1: RAM Reset (Recommended)

This is the safest reset. It clears RAM (temporary memory) but preserves archived programs, apps, and data. Use this first before trying more aggressive resets.

1

Open Memory Menu

Press 2ND then press the + key (labeled MEM above it).

2

Select Reset

In the Memory menu, press 7 (or scroll down to "Resetโ€ฆ").

3

Select All RAM

Press 1 to select "All RAMโ€ฆ"

4

Confirm Reset

Press 2 to confirm ("Reset"). The calculator will restart and display "RAM Cleared".

Method 2: Archive Reset

This resets the archive memory where programs, apps, and data are stored long-term. Use this if a corrupted archived file is causing issues.

1

Open Memory โ†’ Reset

Press 2ND โ†’ + โ†’ 7 (same as above).

2

Select All Archive

Press 2 for "All Archiveโ€ฆ"

3

Confirm

Press 2 to confirm. All archived programs and data will be deleted.

Method 3: Factory Reset (Nuclear Option)

This restores the calculator to its out-of-box state. All RAM, all archived data, all apps, all settings โ€” everything is erased. Only use this as a last resort.

1

Open Memory โ†’ Reset

Press 2ND โ†’ + โ†’ 7

2

Select All Memory

Press 3 for "All Memoryโ€ฆ"

3

Confirm

Press 2 to confirm. The calculator will fully reset and restart.

Emergency: Hard Reset (Frozen Calculator)

If your TI-84 is completely frozen and won't respond to button presses:

  • TI-84 Plus (AAA batteries): Remove one battery, wait 10 seconds, reinsert. If still frozen, remove all batteries AND the backup coin cell battery.
  • TI-84 Plus CE (rechargeable): Press and hold the RESET button on the back of the calculator using a paperclip for 3 seconds.

When Should You Reset?

  • Calculator is frozen and won't respond to any buttons
  • Error messages appear that won't go away (ERR: SYNTAX, ERR: MEMORY, etc.)
  • Calculator is running extremely slowly
  • Screen displays garbled characters or graphics
  • You want to sell or give away the calculator
  • Before a standardized exam (clean slate)

FAQ

A RAM reset only deletes programs stored in RAM โ€” archived programs are safe. An archive or factory reset will delete all programs.

Connect your TI-84 to a computer via USB and use the free TI Connect CE software to transfer programs and data to your computer before resetting.

Try pressing ON firmly for 5 seconds. If that doesn't work, use the hard reset method above โ€” remove batteries or press the reset button on the back.
